A small oval photograph frames in gilded brass, each topped with a cast ribbon-and-bow crest tied into scrolling acanthus, the neoclassical Louis XVI motif that was popular across England and Europe around the turn of the century. The domed convex glass is what sets these apart from flat-fronted frames. It gives a photograph or miniature a slight lift, almost jewel-like, which is why the style was favored for portraits and keepsakes. Both retain their original burgundy velvet backs and brass easel struts. I sourced the pair in England.
Both frames are in good antique condition and present well as a pair. The gilding is warm and even across the fronts, with rubbing and darkening to the high points and along the edges consistent with age and handling. The darkening is most visible along one rim. The domed convex glass on both frames is intact with no cracks, showing light surface scratches and minor spotting consistent with age. The cast ribbon-and-bow crests are complete on both with no losses. The burgundy velvet backs show light soiling and minor edge wear, and one back has a small abrasion to the velvet at the rim. Both easel struts are present and fold and stand correctly. No structural issues.
