A Salter letter balance from the English postal desk, made by George Salter and Company of West Bromwich. This is the No. 1 model, copper-finished cast metal with a brass dial reading to 24 ounces. What sets it apart is the dual scale. The inner ring gives weight in ounces while the outer ring converts straight to postage in pence, so a Victorian or Edwardian clerk could weigh a letter and read off the cost to send it in one glance. The mechanism is the push-down spring type, and it still works. Marked SALTER, LETTER BALANCE No. 1, MADE IN ENGLAND, with the Salter staff-and-arrow trademark.

Condition

Good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The copper finish is warm and even across the body with light surface wear and a few darker spots consistent with handling and age. The brass dial has aged to a soft tone with light scratching and minor spotting, and all the printing remains legible. The needle moves freely and returns, and the spring mechanism functions. The dial is open-faced with no glass cover, which is correct for this model and not a loss. There is some light surface rust visible on the steel components inside the base, as expected for a piece of this age, and minor verdigris at a few seams. The weighing pan sits level and the piece stands solidly on its shaped base.
