The die names a Paris restaurant and the square it stood on, beside the Opera Comique in the second arrondissement. The year band runs across three decades, which means this stamp sat on that counter through the Occupation and the Liberation of the city. It is still fully adjustable and it still stamps. It comes with a fresh inked impression so you can read exactly what it says.

Dimensions
7.75 in. L 4.5 in. W 1.75 in. D
Surface
Patina and handling marks to the metal, old ink in the die, and a handle worn smooth with use. Uncleaned
Primary Material
Nickel plated brass frame
Period
Vintage
Date
Circa 1920s, in use through at least the 1940s. The year band runs 1920 to 1949 inclusive, and makers cut bands starting at or near the year of manufacture, which puts manufacture in the early 1920s. A shop could have bought a stamp mid span, so this is the defensible phrasing rather than a hard year
Origin
France, Paris
Style or Movement
Early twentieth century French commercial equipment
Also Known As
timbre dateur, dater, date stamp
Maker, Mark, or Attribution
The stamp maker is not identified. The die names the customer, Restaurant Tremeur of Place Boieldieu, Paris, which is a different party from whoever manufactured the stamp
Marks
Die reads RESTAURANT, TREMEUR, then the adjustable date, then an address line reading Place Boieldieu. A bottom line is not yet resolved
Construction or Technique
Screw press action with knurled brass thumbwheels driving inset rotating date bands against a fixed moulded rubber die, under a turned pear shaped wooden handle
Secondary Material
Moulded rubber die, turned wood handle

Still fully adjustable and still stamps. Honest wear throughout with patina and handling marks to the metal, old ink in the die and a smoothly worn handle. The thumbwheels turn and the bands set. Sold with a fresh inked impression. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.

Important Info About Antique & Vintage

Every antique and vintage item we carry has lived a life before arriving in your home. These are not factory-made products. They are objects with history, character, and the marks of time.

Age-appropriate wear, patina, minor imperfections, and signs of previous use or repair are inherent to antique and vintage items and are not considered defects. These characteristics are part of what makes each piece unique and are often what give it its beauty and value.

We describe the condition of each piece as accurately as possible in the listing. If you have specific questions about a piece before purchasing, please reach out. We are always happy to provide additional photos or details.

Colors may appear slightly different on screen due to monitor settings and photography lighting. We do our best to represent each item accurately.

Descriptions, dates, attributions, materials, and measurements are provided in good faith and reflect our best assessment based on research, physical examination, and the information available to us. Antique and vintage pieces often carry incomplete or unverifiable histories. Where a detail is an assessment rather than a confirmed fact, it is identified as such. Measurements are approximate. All items are sold as-is, with the photographs and condition report governing.
