This hand-thrown stoneware jar is from southern China and dates to the early 20th century. Traditionally used for storing cooking oil, often sesame or peanut, jars like this were a staple in rural households and village markets. Its narrow mouth and thick, high-fired walls made it ideal for preserving contents while withstanding daily use.
The jar features a deeply textured surface from combed or paddle finishing, encircled by incised bands, and finished in an earthy olive-to-brown ash glaze. The irregularities in glaze and form speak to its utilitarian origins and natural wood-fired kiln process, likely in a southern dragon kiln.
Condition:
Early 20th-century stoneware oil jar in very good condition. Features natural glaze variation, surface patina, and minor kiln imperfections from wood-firing. No cracks or repairs, though the rim shows minor chips from use. Partial impressed stamp visible under glaze. Base exhibits authentic wear and discoloration, enhancing its historical character.
