This is a 1937 English presentation cricket ball, a tradition in which a bowler who achieved something notable during a match was given the ball as a keepsake, fitted with a small engraved plaque recording the recipient's name and the date. This one is inscribed "R.P. Stoneman. Feb. 1937." February is not cricket season in England, which runs April through September, so the date points either to a winter tour in the Southern Hemisphere, an off-season event, or a presentation made after the fact. We don't know which, and that open question is part of what makes the piece interesting. The ball sits on its original ebonized stepped wood plinth, the two are screwed together as one unit, and everything is intact and original after nearly ninety years.
The ball is in well-used condition with honest game wear throughout. The leather has aged to a deep oxblood and burgundy, with overall surface scuffing, abrasion marks, and the darkening of a ball that was genuinely played with. The raised stitched seam is intact but heavily worn, and there is one area of localized damage near a seam junction where the leather has split and some interior binding material is exposed. The silverplate shield plaque is present and secure, with the engraving clearly legible and light age tarnish to the surface.
The ebonized wood plinth shows significant wear throughout. The finish is lifting and cracking across the molding profiles of the lower tiers, with crazing visible across multiple faces. The base corners show actual wood loss with chipping. The back right leg of the base is chipped and loose, with movement in the wood. The plinth does not sit fully stable as a result. The ball and plinth are screwed together as a single unit and are not separable without tools.
